If traveling in your own vehicle, a 4x4 is necessary, if this is not the case the car that you are using can be left at the Durika Foundation office in Buenos Aires and you can travel by taxi to the Reserve.

From the city of San Jose, you will travel via the Southern Inter American Highway, passing through the ‘Cerro de la Muerte’, San Isidro del General, until you arrive at Buenos Aires, which is 200 kilometers from San Jose.  The bus journey takes around four and a half hours and around three and a half to four hours max, by car.

Once you arrive in Buenos Aires, look for the Durika Foundation Office or you can call by telephone for directions (730 06 57).  The address is the following: 100m East, 400m South and 25m South from the National Bank of Costa Rica (look for the blue an white road signs, the Foundation is well known in the area).

The cost of a taxi from Buenos Aires to the Reserve and also the return journey is not included in our rates.  From Buenos Aires to the community there are 17 kilometers of gravel road in regular conditions.  We recommend that you travel early, especially in the rainy season, the season when the road can become slippery and difficult to drive on.

For travelers that like walking and adventure, you can get to the Reserve by various routes; the walk is hard and requires good physical condition (and sense of direction).  Communicate with the Foundation for more details.

If traveling from any point in the South:  Golfito, Paso Canoas, San Vito of Quepos, daily public transport exists to get to Buenos Aires.  Check for times with the respective transport companies.

At your arrival to the community a Spanish speaking resident will meet with you to plan your itinerary according to your wishes and your expectations.  The community also has English, French, Dutch and German speaking guides.
