Geography & Weather

LOCALIZATION:  9 degrees 15 minutes North,  83 degrees 15 minutes West

AREA OF THE RESERVE:  Approximately 8,500 hectares.

TOPOGRAPHY:  Due to the position in the foothills of the Talamanca mountain range, Durika mountain  (3,280 m.a.s.l), the land is inclined, with deep canyons, ridges that join up to the continental divide and a few flat areas.

GEOLOGY:  Characterized for it’s sedimentary rock of the tertiary and Mesozoic (Paleocene, Pliocene, organic period and post organic) mainly marine sedimentation and some land (Pliocene) with insertions of volcanic rock, typical of the west edge of the Talamanca Mountain Range.

ELEVATIONS:  The elevations of the D.F.B.R go from 1.400 m.a.s.l. at the Dlora River, to the highest point at the Arbolado mountain (continental divide) at 2,800 m.a.s.l.  The Durika community is at 1,650 meters.

RAINFALL IN THE COMMUNITY:  (average)

Rainy months, from May to November; approximately 3,500 millimeters per year.

TEMPERATURE IN THE COMMUNITY: (average)

Rainy Season:  10 to 22˚c

Dry Season:        6 to 27˚c

WINDS:

Trade winds with a predominant direction from North to Northeast.  The trade winds prevail during the whole year, but, increase during the dry season, reaching speeds of up to 97 kilometers per hour.

ECOSYSTEMS OF THE RESERVE:

Low pre mountain humid forest:  1000-1500 m.a.s.l.

High pre mountain humid forest:  1500-2000 m.a.s.l.

Cloud forest (oaks):                       2000-2500 m.a.s.l.

Pre paramo:                                    2800 m.a.s.l.

NETWORK OF TRAILS:

In total the DBR has a total of 17 kilometers of trails.
